“Hi Everyone,
Just wanted to let you know about a few upcoming opportunities to volunteer in the Oakland public schools including a musculoskeletal workshop with students at Oakland Tech and our 4th Annual Healthcare Careers Conference for youth across the district taking place Oct 30th from 9a – 1:30p. Feel free to forward this message to others who you think maybe interested in any of these opportunities!
  • Healthcare Careers Conference for Oakland Youth
    • On Saturday, October 30th from 9:00 am to 1:30 pm, Life Academy (walking distance from Fruitvale BART in Oakland) will be hosting its fourth annual Healthcare Careers conference for youth across Oakland. Historically this have been a fun and extremely educational events for students (and volunteers!)
    • We are intending for this opportunity to take place in person. All individuals will be masked and screened for symptoms. We will confirm 2 weeks prior our intention to remain in person vs. transition to virtual should we be experiencing a surge.
    • The goal is for students to learn about the incredible variety of healthcare professions, to meet and ask questions of healthcare providers (especially UIM and those who graduated from Oakland high schools!), and to learn a touch of hands on clinical skills if possible. Providers will be divided by organized by specialty with a goal of having many different careers represented in a single room (ie OB/GYN with a doula, midwife, OB RN, GYN MA, surgical tech, MD, NP, etc).
    • You would be placed in a themed room with a team of others. You can do a presentation/panel together or have students rotate through different stations (typically works best). Four different groups of students will visit your room for 50 minutes at a time.
  • Musculoskeletal Workshop Volunteers Needed
    • On Oct 12, students from Oakland Technical High School’s Physiology classes will be engaging in a 90 min hands on musculoskeletal workshop that will involve: mini-cases, looking at x rays to classify fractures, splinting, and ACE wrapping injuries. All workshop lesson plans will be pre-created for you. The site is a 15 min walk from MacArthur BART and will be taking place in person.
  • Volunteers Willing to Speak with Students about Careers of Health Topics
    • It is common for Oakland Unified School District students to pursue informational interviews about job careers or various health/public health topics. If you would be open to talking with a student about a career or specific topic, please complete the form below. The student would reach out to you via email to schedule at a time convenient for you.
